The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has launched a new electronic system to manage documents and records, in a move aimed at improving efficiency and service delivery.
The Electronic Document and Records Management System (EDRMS) was unveiled at the UNBS head office in Bweyogerere by the Executive Director, Eng James Kasigwa. The system marks a key step in the agency’s shift from paper-based work to digital operations.
Kasigwa said the new platform will help the bureau work faster and make better decisions. He added that it will also improve how information is stored and accessed.
“This system is a key step towards modernising our operations. It will make us a more responsive institution, enable faster decision-making, improve records security, and ensure that critical information is easily accessible when needed,” he said.
Kasigwa thanked the government, through the Ministry of Public Service, and the consultants who supported the project. He noted that this is the first time UNBS has automated its records registry.
The Commissioner for Records and Information Management at the Ministry of Public Service, Lillian Rose Ariso, welcomed the move. She said UNBS is the first government entity to set up a registry and roll out the system at the same time.
The new system will manage how documents are created, stored, and retrieved across the bureau. It replaces manual processes with a central digital platform.
Officials say the system will reduce delays caused by handling paper records. It will also improve transparency by keeping clear records of who accesses information. The platform is expected to protect sensitive data and help UNBS follow national standards on records management.
UNBS said the move is part of its wider plan to use technology to improve services and respond better to the needs of the public.
