The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Military Police Brigade, in coordination with the Uganda Police Force Traffic Directorate, has rolled out a joint enforcement campaign code-named Operation Tekeleza Sheria across the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area and upcountry highways.
The operation, which takes immediate effect, is aimed at restoring road discipline and eliminating traffic violations committed with impunity by both civilians and armed personnel.
In a notice signed by the Acting Director of Defence Public Information, Col. Chris Magezi, the joint forces announced that the dragnet will specifically target:
- Unregistered and Unlicensed Vehicles: Immediate impounding of all numberless, unregistered, or unlicensed motor vehicles operating on public roads.
- Concealed License Plates: Vehicles operating with covered, altered, or obscured registration plates, including government automobiles attached to Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) as well as security units, will be impounded. Drivers will be arrested and arraigned before civilian courts.
- Errant Security Personnel: Military, police, and intelligence personnel who drive without valid driver’s permits or violate standard highway codes will be taken into custody.
- Unlawful Possession of Military Paraphernalia: Civilian vehicles found carrying official military stores, such as combat camouflage jackets draped over driver seats, caps, or tactical gear, will be seized. Drivers and vehicle owners will be arrested and tried before the General Court Martial under the amended UPDF Act.
Col. Magezi urged motorists and the public to cooperate with joint checkpoints, noting that the enforcement operation will proceed in earnest until full compliance is restored across national road networks.
