The committee overseeing the succession of the late Tooro King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV has selected George Desmond Kamurasi as his successor, according to Andrew Mwenda.
Mwenda said the 21-member Royal Succession Committee met in Fort Portal City on September 4, 2026, and backed the 36-year-old Kamurasi.
He said 18 members attended the meeting and 15 voted for Kamurasi.
The decision awaits a formal announcement by Charles Kamurasi, the Omusuuga and head of the Babiito royal clan.
Mwenda said the Omusuuga told him Tooro custom requires the kingdom to announce the new monarch after the burial of the late king.
“I have made this announcement to avoid social media speculation that may cause unnecessary confusion,” Mwenda said in a post on X.
The succession committee was formed by the Babiito royal clan on August 28 following King Oyo’s death. Charles Kamurasi chairs the 21-member team.
George Kamurasi is a son of George Desmond “Jimmy” Mugenyi, a younger brother of former Tooro King Patrick David Matthew Olimi Kaboyo II.
Mwenda said the will of King George Rukidi III had placed Mugenyi second in the line of succession to his brother, Olimi Kaboyo II.
Mwenda also said he had discussed the committee’s decision with Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba and Commander Land Forces Gen Kayanja Muhanga.
According to Mwenda, Gen Kainerugaba endorsed the committee’s choice, saying it complied with Tooro customs, precedent and succession laws.
Mwenda further said Gen Kainerugaba told him President Museveni supported the succession committee’s decision.
He said the President had sent a delegation led by a senior Cabinet minister to Fort Portal for consultations with key stakeholders.
