KCCA Steps up Clean-up Drive, Demands Public Responsibility

KCCA has called for a shift in public mindset, urging Kampala residents to take responsibility for sanitation as part of efforts to keep the city clean.

A change in public attitude is crucial to improving sanitation in Kampala, the executive director of Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), Sharifah Buzeki, has said. She urged residents to take personal responsibility for cleanliness in their communities.

Buzeki made the remarks during the weekly Weyonje clean-up exercise held in Wankulukuku, Kitebi, Kabowa and Mutundwe in Lubaga Division. She said many people wrongly believe that waste management is entirely KCCA’s duty because they pay taxes. She noted that this thinking weakens efforts to keep the city clean.

“KCCA is responsible for cleaning roads, walkways and public spaces. We will not come and clean in your courtyard,” Buzeki said. “From the road to your building and home, that responsibility lies with the individual.”

Residents and business operators took part in the exercise. They cleared drainage channels, sorted waste and promoted proper disposal methods. Buzeki thanked participants and said joint effort is key to maintaining clean communities.

“Clean communities start with all of us. Do not let anyone litter under your watch,” she said.

She also asked property owners to keep their surroundings clean and control overgrown vegetation. She warned that those who fail to meet basic sanitation standards risk enforcement action, including arrest.

During the exercise, city enforcement teams removed illegal kiosks. The move is part of wider efforts to restore order in trade and improve public health.

The Weyonje initiative is one of KCCA’s ongoing campaigns to mobilise residents and promote shared responsibility for cleanliness across Kampala.
