A panga-wielding gang of six raided Bugoye Sub-County Police Station in Kasese District early Thursday morning in an attempt to disarm an officer on duty, leaving one assailant shot dead and four suspects in custody as joint security teams mount a manhunt for the remaining accomplices.

Police in Kasese District have repelled an early-morning violent raid on Bugoye Sub-County Police Station, shooting one assailant dead and taking four suspects into custody following a foiled attempt to snatch an officer's firearm.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:00 AM on Thursday, October 1, 2026, when a group of about six men armed with machetes (pangas) descended on the station premises in the Rwenzori East policing region.

Uganda Police Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Rusoke Kituuma, confirmed the raid in an official security brief, detailing that the assailants specifically targeted the lone sentry officer on station guard duty with the intent to overpower him and seize his service rifle.

The officer put up resistance and discharged his firearm in self-defense, shooting one of the attackers in the lower limb.

Although the wounded suspect fled the scene alongside his accomplices under cover of darkness, joint pursuit teams later discovered his body abandoned a short distance from the police station, having succumbed to excessive bleeding.

The deceased's identity has not yet been confirmed, and his remains have been conveyed to the mortuary for a post-mortem examination.

In a rapid follow-up cordon-and-search operation conducted by territorial police and internal security operatives, four key suspects were tracked down and arrested in connection with the station attack. Police identified the suspects as: Simon Irumba, Abson Kiiza, George Kadama, Lenaxi Baluku.

Crime scene investigators recovered a machete left behind by the fleeing gang, which has been tagged as an exhibit alongside other physical evidence.

Security agencies have heightened surveillance across vulnerable police posts in the Rwenzori sub-region, with ACP Kituuma calling on community members to report any suspicious individuals seeking clandestine medical treatment for gunshot or physical injuries.
