At least 14 people have died and 28 others have been injured after an OPIT Travellers bus collided head-on with a trailer at Bobi Trading Centre along the Kampala-Gulu Highway in Gulu District.
The crash happened at about 9:34pm on July 7, 2026, according to the Traffic and Road Safety Directorate.
Police identified the vehicles involved as an OPIT Travellers Isuzu bus, registration UBE 110H, and a Mercedes-Benz Actros trailer, registration KBS 564D/ZE 7948.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the bus driver, who was allegedly speeding, attempted to avoid a pedestrian crossing the road. The driver reportedly lost control before crashing head-on into the oncoming trailer.
Police said 14 people died at the scene, while 28 others sustained injuries.
The injured were taken to various medical facilities for treatment.
Traffic police spokesperson Michael Kananura said investigations into the cause of the crash were ongoing.
“We urge all motorists to strictly observe speed limits especially during night when visibility is reduced. Drivers are also reminded to remain vigilant, anticipate pedestrian movement in trading centres and always drive at speeds that allow them to stop safely,” Kananura said.
The latest crash adds to Uganda’s growing road safety challenge. Police have repeatedly cited speeding, dangerous overtaking and driver error among the leading causes of fatal road crashes across the country, particularly on major highways.
