Military leaders and local elders have launched a joint security and infrastructure initiative to stabilize the Mubarak region in Somalia.
The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), operating under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission (AUSSOM), convened the strategic meeting alongside the Somali National Army (SNA). Colonel Owiny Akena, the Battle Group 44 Commander, led the dialogue aimed at strengthening the bond between security forces and the civilian population.
The engagement focused on mobilizing community support to sustain the peace achieved in Mubarak and Darusalam. Colonel Akena emphasized that soldiers alone cannot guarantee long-term stability without local partnership.
“Lasting peace cannot be achieved by the military alone. It requires the full support and cooperation of the community, especially in guiding the youth towards positive and productive activities,” Col Owiny said.
Beyond security, the UPDF and SNA are prioritizing the restoration of vital economic assets. Engineers have already begun unblocking agricultural canals to boost local farming. Furthermore, the command confirmed that road construction linking Mubarak to Awdhegle has resumed following the resolution of previous logistical hurdles.
SNA Commander Sayidinur Ali lauded the Ugandan contingent for their professional conduct and bravery in the field.
“We commend the UPDF for their commitment and sacrifice in ensuring security in Mubarak. Their presence has brought stability and renewed confidence among the people,” Sayidinur Ali said.
Community elders thanked the UPDF for liberating the town and providing essential humanitarian services. They noted that recent medical outreach and food distribution have restored hope among the residents. The leaders urged the forces to expand these interventions to reach more vulnerable families in the outskirts.
Senior and junior officers from both armies attended the session to reinforce the integrated approach to regional development.
