Heavy rains have triggered deadly mudslides in Eastern Uganda, claiming at least nine lives, including three children, the Uganda Red Cross Society reports.
In Chesower, Bukwo District, a mudslide swept through a home, killing three children from a single family. Uganda Red Cross volunteers are on the ground conducting rapid assessments and providing support to affected families. Access to the area remains difficult as continued rainfall has cut off several roads, slowing rescue and relief efforts.
In a related incident, a second mudslide struck Yatui in Kween District on Wednesday night, leaving six people dead. Red Cross teams are coordinating with local authorities and residents to carry out search and recovery operations.
Photographs from the scene show extensive damage to homes and farmlands. The Uganda Red Cross says a detailed assessment of the impact and humanitarian needs will be released once field teams complete their evaluation.
“Uganda Red Cross volunteers are on the ground conducting assessments, and a more detailed report will be shared as soon as possible,” the organization said in a statement.
The Red Cross continues to work closely with local communities to provide emergency support and relief to the affected families.
