Japanese Ambassador to Uganda Hidemoto Fukuzawa on Tuesday announced that his government had decided to make a new contribution of $9.8 million (about Shs36 billion) to “mitigate the impacts of Covid-19 to the vulnerable population, including refugees, host community members, women and children in Uganda.”

The money will be sent through partner agencies, namely: UNHCR, UNFPA, UN Women, UNICEF, WFP, UNDP, IOM and IFPRI.

“Japan recognizes that the humanitarian situation in refugee-hosting areas is devastating, especially under the spread of the COVID-19,” the ambassador said. "Japan will always be by your side and support the government of Uganda as a member of the international community,"

Last year, Japan donated $1.4 million through UNICEF and $3.8m through the ministry of health to help counter the coronavirus.

From 2016 to 2020, Japan has contributed approximately $35 million to Uganda by utilizing the supplementary budget to provide humanitarian supports and emergency responses in a timely manner, the ambassador said.

On February 11, 2021, Ambassador Fukuzawa on behalf his government signed a deal with Finance Minister Matia Kasaija (for Uganda) to bankroll improvement of the road network in refugee-hosting areas of West-Nile sub-region. Japan will inject $36.8 million into this project.
