President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has officially begun a new five-year term following a high-profile swearing-in ceremony at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds on Tuesday.
Chief Justice Dr. Flavian Zeija administered the Oath of Allegiance and the Oath of the President before a crowd of thousands and several visiting African heads of state. Justice Simon Byabakama, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, formally declared Museveni as the elected President of Uganda following the recent general elections. The ceremony marks the start of the President's eighth term in office.
After signing the formal oaths, President Museveni received the instruments of power from the Chief Justice. These ceremonial items included the National Flag, the Presidential Standard Flag, the National Anthem, and the National Coat of Arms. The Chief Justice also handed over the Public Seal to symbolize the legal commencement of the new administration.
The event drew a significant international presence, with several presidents and high-profile dignitaries arriving via Entebbe International Airport to witness the occasion. These leaders joined Ugandan officials to celebrate the nation’s democratic milestone. General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces of the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) was present at the historical function. The CDF also handed over the instruments of national defense to President Museveni.
The president inspected the military parade that also featured aerial displays by fighter jets.
The Electoral Commission noted that the peaceful transition reaffirms the country's commitment to constitutional order. Following the formalities, the President is expected to host a luncheon for the visiting foreign delegations.
