The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has officially directed its affiliated Members of Parliament-elect for the 12th Parliament to support the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Central Executive Committee’s (CEC) endorsed candidates for the upcoming speakership race.

In a letter dated March 11, 2026, the PLU leadership expressed its full backing for Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among and Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa to retain their positions as Speaker and Deputy Speaker, respectively.

The correspondence, signed by PLU General Secretary David Kabanda, MP, reveals that the decision follows guidance from the Chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

According to the statement, the move is rooted in the "Tuko Pamoja" (We are together) principle, emphasizing unity between the PLU and the ruling NRM party. Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has guided that all PLU-leaning members should support the candidates endorsed by the NRM CEC.

The PLU leadership noted that this decision was informed by the duo's "proven track record and unwavering commitment" to guiding parliamentary debate and steering the legislature, as stated in the letter. Furthermore, the leadership argued that their victory reflects the trust and confidence of the electorate, which the PLU urges them to uphold through principles of patriotism and socio-economic transformation.

As the 12th Parliament prepares to convene, the PLU leadership has appealed to its members to maintain decorum, dignity, and discipline during the selection of these leaders. This directive serves as a strategic effort to ensure a consolidated front and a smooth transition into the new legislative session.
