The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has received 1,000 kits for its data centre in preparation for the upcoming national ID mass enrolment and renewal exercise.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, December 29, NIRA announced that more consignments are expected soon. “These kits are a fundamental milestone in our journey to the realisation of the project’s commencement,” the authority stated.

The government has allocated Shs666.85 billion for the exercise, which seeks to enrol 17.2 million Ugandans and renew 15.8 million ID cards. The funding covers essential hardware, software, operating systems, and blank ID cards.

Additionally, allowances for 13,000 registration assistants and other administrative expenses are included in the budget. NIRA clarified that expired national IDs will remain valid for an extra year, enabling holders to access essential services such as government transactions and financial operations.

This provision is supported by Sections 65 and 66 of the Registration of Persons Act. However, some IDs have already expired. The mass registration exercise aims to ensure that all Ugandans aged 17 and above are registered and issued with national IDs.
