President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has launched the construction of the Bukasa–Ssentema–Kakiri Road, a key infrastructure project aimed at improving connectivity and economic activity in Wakiso District. The road, measuring 12.7 kilometers in length and designed as an 18-meter-wide dual carriageway, is being constructed by Chinese firm CICO at a total cost of Shs56 billion.

The project is scheduled to run for 18 months, starting in May 2025 and ending in November 2026. According to Eng. Simon Odoki, the resident contractor, work is already underway and currently stands at 4.1 percent completion.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony held at Bukasa Catholic Church in Busiro County, President Museveni reminded Ugandans that infrastructure alone is not enough to guarantee prosperity.

“It is good to have a tarmac road, but what is your income at home?” the President asked, emphasizing that the government’s development strategy under the NRM includes both infrastructure and wealth creation at the household level.

Museveni explained that increasing household income would naturally drive job creation, especially as industries and service sectors like hospitality and transport expand. He stressed that value addition through local factories was essential in creating employment and boosting the economy.

The President donated Shs300 million to both Bukasa Catholic Church and the area’s Protestant church.

Former Vice President Gilbert Bukenya, who attended the event, praised the NRM government for fulfilling a long-standing promise to develop the road. “As a gesture of appreciation, we should support President Museveni and the NRM government in the upcoming elections,” Bukenya said. He also highlighted the government’s progress in promoting value addition and establishing local manufacturing industries.

Eng. Odoki expressed gratitude to the people of Wakiso for offering the right of way without compensation, attributing the community’s cooperation to President Museveni’s visionary leadership.

Once completed, the Bukasa–Ssentema–Kakiri Road is expected to transform transportation within Busiro County, ease trade, and fuel socio-economic development across Wakiso District and beyond.
