KCCA to Demolish Kibuye Roundabout in Major Queens Way Expansion

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has announced plans to remove the Kibuye roundabout and replace it with traffic lights as part of efforts to ease congestion along Queens Way.

The decision forms part of an ongoing project to expand the busy road from the Clock Tower flyover to Kibuye into six lanes.

In an update issued on Monday, October 19, 2026, KCCA confirmed that the roundabout, known for its flower gardens, would disappear to make way for a new traffic management system.

"Queens Way is getting expanded to a 6-lane road complete with a wide walkway and other features. But that won't be all. Remember that huge roundabout in Kibuye!?" KCCA stated.

Responding to a resident who complained about traffic jams at the junction, the authority confirmed that the roundabout would be removed.

Traffic lights will replace the existing structure to control vehicle movement and reduce delays at one of Kampala's busiest junctions.

The road project covers 1.26 kilometres, with six lanes measuring 3.5 metres each. A central island will separate vehicles travelling in opposite directions.

KCCA will also construct pedestrian walkways along the expanded road. The stretch between Kibuye and Kayemba underpass will have three-metre-wide walkways, while the section towards Clock Tower will have two-metre-wide paths.

The authority reported progress on construction, with 75 per cent of drainage works completed.

Contractors have finished drainage works and laid the first asphalt layer on the right-hand side of the road. Work continues on the opposite side.

The project also includes solar-powered streetlights to improve visibility and safety for motorists and pedestrians at night.

Queens Way serves as a major route for traffic between Kampala city centre, Katwe, Kibuye, Najjanankumbi and other areas along Entebbe Road.

The road experiences heavy congestion during peak hours as motorists travel between the city centre and Kampala's southern suburbs.

Kibuye roundabout has remained a major traffic bottleneck because it connects several busy routes serving Katwe, Makindye and Entebbe Road.

KCCA expects the expansion to improve traffic flow and strengthen connections to the proposed Kibuye-Busega Expressway, which is intended to ease travel towards western Uganda.

The removal of the roundabout will mark a major change to one of Kampala's familiar road junctions as the city seeks to tackle persistent traffic congestion.
