Nansana Ghetto Residents to Benefit from Free Medical Camp

Residents of Nansana in Wakiso District are set to receive free medical services on Sunday, November 8, following a partnership between the government-backed Ghetto Structures Programme and the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU).

The medical camp, scheduled to run from 8am to 4pm in Nansana Ghetto, will provide residents with cancer screening, dental treatment, eye care, medical consultations and other healthcare services.

The initiative is sponsored by PLU Wakiso District coordinator Freda Twesigye, who said the Nansana event would serve as a starting point for similar medical camps across Uganda.

"I am sponsoring a medical camp, the first of its kind in the ghetto structures," Twesigye said.

She said the organisers intend to extend the outreach to other ghetto communities as part of efforts to improve access to essential medical services.

The coordinator of the PLU Medical Team, Dr Gilbert Tuhamire, said the camp would involve specialist doctors and general practitioners capable of treating a range of medical conditions.

"We have a dedicated team of specialists and general physicians capable of rendering all these services to our people free of charge," Dr Tuhamire said.

He said services would include cervical, breast and prostate cancer screening, dental care, eye treatment, reproductive healthcare, mental health support and consultations for children.

Residents will also access blood pressure and blood sugar checks, laboratory tests, gynaecological services, family planning, counselling and treatment for bone and joint conditions.

The medical team will provide prescribed medicines at no cost.

According to the event poster, Maj Emma Kuteesa, the presidential coordinator for Ghetto Affairs, is expected to attend as chief guest.

Businge Ali, the speaker of Nansana Ghetto Structure, is among the local leaders involved in the event.

The Ghetto Structures initiative was established under President Museveni to organise young people living in informal urban settlements and promote security, economic empowerment and community development.

The programme emerged through collaboration between State House, through the Office of the Comptroller, and the Uganda Police Force's Directorate of Crime Intelligence.

Maj Gen Ddamulira serves as its national coordinator, while Maj Kuteesa oversees ghetto affairs under the presidency.

The programme began developing in March 2022, with the Ghetto Structure established the following year, according to accounts previously given by its leadership.

Organisers also plan to conduct online PLU membership registration and collect endorsements for Gen Muhoozi's proposed presidential candidature in 2031.

The Nansana medical camp will bring healthcare providers and community leaders together while providing a venue for PLU's separate political registration exercise.
