Uganda is expected to receive US$410 million in American health support in the first year, with total funding projected to exceed US$1.7 billion over five years, as both governments explore ways to strengthen healthcare delivery through local governments.

The United States has committed US$410 million towards supporting Uganda’s health services in the first year of a new funding arrangement, with total support expected to exceed US$1.7 billion over five years.

The funding commitment featured in discussions between the Minister for Local Government, Barugahara Balaam Ateenyi, and a delegation from the United States Embassy in Uganda led by Chargé d’Affaires Mikael Cleverley.

The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation and identifying opportunities to support local governments in improving essential public services, particularly healthcare.

The delegation also included Mary Borgman, the PEPFAR Uganda Country Coordinator, and Kevan Higgins, the Political and Economic Counsellor.

Barugahara said local governments play a critical role in delivering healthcare services and ensuring that support reaches communities.

He emphasised the need for the funding to translate into tangible improvements in health facilities, staffing, service delivery and the overall wellbeing of Ugandans.

As the ministry responsible for local government administration, he said it was important to ensure that the partnership strengthens healthcare delivery at the grassroots.

The minister welcomed continued cooperation between Uganda and the United States, saying stronger local government systems would contribute to better health services and improved quality of life.

The discussions come amid efforts to strengthen Uganda’s health system through international partnerships and improved service delivery at local government level.
