Former Makerere University Business School (MUBS) Principal, Professor Waswa Balunywa, has been remanded to Luzira Prison on charges of abuse of office.
The charges stem from his court appearance, where he faced allegations of unlawful recruitment practices during his time at MUBS.
According to the prosecution, Prof. Balunywa illegally appointed three people as administrative assistants between February and April 2023, despite them lacking the required academic qualifications for the positions.
The prosecution argues that this led to unnecessary government expenditure, forming the basis for the corruption case.
Court proceedings revealed that the recruitment process did not follow established guidelines and procedures for hiring public servants, which prompted an investigation by the Inspectorate of Government.
Prof. Balunywa, who was at the helm of MUBS for several years, has denied the charges and is awaiting a bail hearing.
The case has attracted significant public interest, with many seeing it as a critical test of the government’s efforts to combat corruption and ensure accountability in public institutions.
