The Police Community Policing Department has launched a sensitization campaign in refugee settlement camps, with the objective of fighting criminal acts.

The sensitization campaign is headed by the Head of Community Policing in the Uganda Police Force, ACP Anatoli Muletererwa. The exercise aims at ending among others; acts of radicalization, revenge, thefts, murders, rape and abduction and fighting for food, which are common cases reported in refugee settlement areas and have, sometimes resulted into deaths and insecurity in the areas.

In his message, ACP Muleterwa urged the refugees in Panyandoli Settlement Camp Kiryandongo District, to live in harmony and have respect for the law. "We need the refugees to understand the legal regime and partner with us to secure themselves. Some of them have different cultural sentiments which they tend to import, which are quite resistant to the common law and jeopardizes security and the only way to bring this down is through sensitization but also Inform them (refugees) of what we want of them by ensuring they work and cooperate with police in fighting criminality in and among them," he said.

ACP Muleterwa also appealed to the host communities, especially local leaders to accept and work with the refugees so as to get rid of crime in the camps.
