A Police officer in Moyo district has been shot dead by a civilian who grabbed a gun from him.
Majid Moro, an officer from the neighbouring Koboko District was killed at Onyire village, Logoba Parish in Moyo Sub County, Moyo District where he and his colleagues had been deployed to thwart a mob attack on another resident accused of poisoning two young men to death.
Local leaders say that casual labourers aged 18 and 21 fell sick shortly after returning from their employer’s home where they had gone to demand payment for delivering timber to one of his clients. The duo was rushed to Moyo general hospital on suspicion that they had been poisoned. However, they died just hours after arrival at the facility.
Following the suspicious death, a group of residents stormed the suspect’s home in a revenge attack. This called for police intervention. Joseph Alumai, the Logoba Parish Chairman says when the police arrived, angry residents pelted stones at them. It was during the scuffle that one of the residents grabbed a gun from a police officer and shot him dead.
Shafik Kasuja, the acting Moyo District Police Commander says the unidentified shooter escaped after the incident and is currently on the run. He added that investigations are underway to trace the suspect and have him arrested.
Kasuja meanwhile reveals that police was able to rescue the man under mob attack and is currently under police protection.
