The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) Tax Education team is meeting with landlords in the real estate sector across Eastern Uganda to boost tax compliance.

Patricia Nakayiza, who is leading the campaign, explained that the sessions are designed to equip citizens with the knowledge they need to meet their tax obligations.

“This ties into URA’s broader mission of fostering a tax-compliant culture that supports the country’s national development efforts,” she said.

The sessions cover essential topics, such as rental income tax filing, the use of receipt books, return filing, and the differences between property rates and income tax.

David Olowo, a landlord with several properties in Tororo, commended the initiative. “I’m now confident in managing my rental income tax and avoiding unnecessary penalties,” he said.

The campaign also reached schools, including Rock High School in Tororo, where business students learned about Taxpayer Identification Numbers (TINs), the role of the Commissioner General, and how the Electronic Fiscal Receipting and Invoicing System (EFRIS) operates.

“We’re grateful URA came to teach our learners about tax,” said Ogwang James, the deputy head teacher at Rock High School. “We’ll definitely invite them again.”

On Wednesday, the outreach moved to Busia, where the tax team engaged students at Busia Secondary School and Lumino SS. On Thursday, the team held a session with real estate stakeholders and visited two more schools.

Through educating both current taxpayers and future generations, URA is setting the stage for improved tax compliance and long-term economic growth.
