Brigadier General Jackson Kayanja has officially welcomed UPDF Battle Group 47 into Somalia under the AUSSOM mission. The Commander urged the new troops to uphold Pan-Africanism and maintain strict discipline to ensure regional stability.

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has formally integrated Battle Group 47 (XLVII) into the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).

The arrival of the new battle group marks a critical rotation in Uganda’s ongoing commitment to regional security. The Sector One Contingent Commander, Brigadier General Jackson Kayanja, officially received the troops into the mission area on Sunday. He challenged the soldiers to maintain high levels of operational readiness as they begin their tour of duty.

Brigadier General Kayanja emphasized that internal cohesion is vital for success in the volatile region. He instructed the soldiers to build strong professional bonds across all units and departments. The Commander reminded the new arrivals that their mission serves a broader continental purpose beyond military tactics. He noted that the Ugandan presence in Somalia remains firmly rooted in the principles of Pan-Africanism.

“Maintain the spirit of teamwork; we are here as one force serving under AUSSOM,” Brigadier General Kayanja said.

The leadership also addressed modern challenges to military discipline and security. The Sector One Deputy Commander, Colonel Francis Aragamoi Obita, explicitly cautioned the troops against the misuse of social media platforms. He stressed that irresponsible communication could compromise operational security and endanger lives. Colonel Obita urged the soldiers to prioritize the mission’s integrity in all their public and private interactions.

“We are here to support our brothers and sisters in achieving lasting peace and stability,” Brigadier General Kayanja added.

Senior and junior officers attended the briefing to oversee the transition of the incoming force. Battle Group 47 joins the mission at a time when AUSSOM is focusing on consolidating territorial gains and training local Somali security forces. The group will be expected to conduct patrols, secure key supply routes, and protect vital infrastructure within its assigned area of responsibility.
