The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has initiated a nationwide enforcement campaign against illegal public Wi-Fi hotspot providers. Partnering with licensed ISPs and government agencies, the telecom regulator aims to eliminate unauthorized telecommunications installations to safeguard consumer data privacy and secure critical digital infrastructure.

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has launched a nationwide enforcement operation against unlicensed public Wi-Fi service providers.

The regulatory body is executing the targeted crackdown in collaboration with licensed Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and relevant government agencies.

The joint operation aims to protect consumers from growing cyber threats and severe data privacy violations.

According to a public notice issued on Monday, July 7, 2026, several unlicensed operators are installing unauthorized telecommunications equipment in public spaces.

The commission stated that these illegal installations compromise the integrity of Uganda's critical communications infrastructure.

UCC relies on its legal mandate under the Uganda Communications Act, Cap 103, to regulate all telecommunications, data communication, and infrastructure.

The regulator warned that providing public internet access without a valid license directly flouts national laws.

Unlicensed services routinely expose unsuspecting users to unreliable connectivity and digital safety risks. Also, consumers using illegal Wi-Fi networks lack formal options for redress when service complaints arise.

The commission has directed all individuals and businesses operating unsanctioned hotspots to regularize their operations immediately.

Firms that fail to comply with the directive must cease their wireless internet services altogether.

The regulator urged members of the public to verify internet service providers through the official registry list on the UCC website.

UCC reiterated its long-term commitment to maintaining a secure, innovative, and affordable digital environment to support national transformation.
