Tanzania and Uganda have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties, boosting trade, and enhancing regional cooperation.
During a meeting at Chamwino State House in Dodoma on February 13, 2025, Tanzania’s Vice President, Dr. Philip Mpango, and Uganda’s Ambassador to Tanzania, Fred Mwesigye, discussed key areas of collaboration.
Mpango emphasized the deep historical ties between the two nations and pledged continued cooperation at international forums, including the United Nations, the African Union, and the East African Community.
He called for increased trade, joint agricultural research, and the exchange of expertise in modern farming techniques and drought-resistant crops. He also stressed the need for joint efforts to control transboundary diseases affecting livestock and crops.
The Vice President highlighted Tanzania’s infrastructure and energy projects aimed at facilitating trade and investment. These include the construction of the Mwalimu Nyerere Hydroelectric Dam, the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), improvements at the Dar es Salaam Port, and the introduction of digital systems for cargo handling and transportation.
Ambassador Mwesigye commended Tanzania for upholding the legacy of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, who played a key role in supporting Uganda’s liberation struggles.
He also thanked Tanzania for its role in facilitating Uganda’s oil exports through the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP). He noted that even before production begins, the pipeline’s construction has already brought significant economic and social benefits to communities along its route.
