The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth-Oboth, has held a strategic meeting with a delegation of Uganda's eminent statesmen to deliberate on the historical necessity of the East African Federation.
The diplomatic engagement took place on the sidelines of the ongoing East African Community (EAC) Week at the Parliament buildings.
The delegation of former leaders included Prime Minister Emeritus Rt. Hon. Ruhakana Rugunda, Kabale University Chancellor and former Member of Parliament for Rukungiri District (1996-2001) Hon. Mathew Rukikaire, and former Minister for Security Hon. Chris Rwakasisi.

The elder statesmen were accompanied by the Minister for Internal Affairs, Prof. Ephraim Kamuntu, alongside executive members of the Parliamentary East African Community Forum.
Together with the Speaker, the leaders shared deep historical insights on regional integration, emphasizing the socio-economic value of a united East Africa.

The reflections directly align with the core objectives of the EAC Week, which seeks to use parliamentary mechanisms to accelerate regional cohesion.
The EAC Week is running from July 8 to July 10, 2026, under the theme: “Advancing the East African Community Agenda through Legislative Dialogue.”
