Uganda has reaffirmed its support for Cuba, citing long-standing historical ties and shared principles under the Non-Aligned Movement.

On February 20, 2026, Cuba’s Charge d’Affaires a.i., Juan Humberto Magas Pino, paid a courtesy call on State Minister for Foreign Affairs in charge of International Affairs, Henry Okello Oryem, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kampala.

The meeting focused on the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the historical relationship between Cuba and Africa. Ambassador Pino highlighted Cuba’s continued support for African independence struggles and the fight against colonialism. He recalled Havana’s role in supporting South Africa’s liberation during the apartheid era.

Minister Oryem referred to the 2024 Kampala Summit Declaration and United Nations General Assembly Resolution A/RES/80/209 on Human Rights and Unilateral Coercive Measures. The resolution, tabled by the NAM group, was adopted by 122 countries in December 2025.

Oryem stressed the importance of African solidarity with Cuba, particularly in light of the long-standing United States blockade. He said Uganda values its special relationship with Cuba and remains committed to strengthening cooperation.

“We stand in solidarity with nations like Cuba and peoples subjected to unilateral coercive measures, particularly those from our Movement,” said Okello Oryem.

Uganda and Cuba have maintained diplomatic ties for decades. Both countries continue to work together through multilateral platforms such as NAM and the United Nations, where they often advocate for developing nations and oppose unilateral sanctions.

The meeting reaffirmed Kampala’s position that African states must speak with one voice on issues affecting fellow members of the Movement.
