The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has officially retracted its endorsement of Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among and Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa for the leadership of the 12th Parliament.
In a statement issued by the Secretary General David Kabanda, PLU Chairman Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba directed the immediate withdrawal of support for the duo as candidates for Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
The decision, communicated in a press release dated May 12, 2026, overturns an earlier endorsement made on March 11, 2026.
The move signals a significant realignment within the political pressure group as the race for parliamentary leadership intensifies.
According to the statement signed by PLU General Secretary David Kabanda, MP, the previous guidance regarding the two candidates is now void.
“The endorsement of Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among and Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa respectively for the 12th Parliament of Uganda vide a letter dated 11th March, 2026 is retracted and withdrawn with immediate effect,” the statement declared.
Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has now instructed PLU-leaning Members of Parliament-elect to wait for further direction from the President.
The leadership has urged its members to support the specific candidates that H.E. the President will present for the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker. This directive ensures that the group remains aligned with the broader executive branch's choice for the legislative house.
The General Secretary emphasized the disciplined nature of the organization in the wake of this sudden policy reversal. He noted that the group operates under a strict chain of command.
“In the PLU, we follow the command, instructions and guidance of our Chairman Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba at all times,” Kabanda noted.
Political analysts suggest this withdrawal could create a competitive opening for other contenders seeking the top seats in the 12th Parliament. The shift highlights the influential role of the Patriotic League in shaping parliamentary dynamics alongside the ruling NRM party. For now, the group's members await the President's formal nominations to determine their next voting course.
The move follows corruption allegations against the parliamentary leadership as well as lavish and extravagant spending.
