Cryptocurrency exchange Binance has committed $250,000 (about Shs940 million) to support efforts to contain the Ebola outbreak in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The funding comes as health authorities battle the spread of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment. The outbreak has strained health systems in eastern DRC and raised concerns across the wider region.
Binance said the money will be shared equally between the Uganda Red Cross Society and Doctors Without Borders, also known as Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), to support emergency operations in affected and high-risk areas.
The funding will help strengthen treatment and medical care, support contact tracing, expand community awareness campaigns, and provide sanitation materials and protective gear for frontline health workers.
Part of the support will target remote and vulnerable communities where access to healthcare services, protective equipment and public health information remains limited. The company said the intervention aims to slow transmission while improving community preparedness.
Binance co-chief executive officer Richard Teng said frontline teams responding to the outbreak are providing critical support under difficult conditions.
“Communities across Africa continue to show extraordinary resilience in the face of complex challenges, but frontline responders should not have to face crises like this alone. The teams working to contain the Ebola disease outbreak are delivering vital, life-saving support under incredibly difficult conditions. We are proud to support both the Uganda Red Cross Society and Doctors Without Borders as they work to protect vulnerable populations, strengthen local response efforts, and deliver urgent care where it is needed most,” Teng said.
Uganda Red Cross Society Secretary General Robert Kwesiga welcomed the contribution, saying it would strengthen response efforts.
“Strong partnerships are essential during public health emergencies since we are not able to manage the outbreak alone. The support from Binance comes in so timely and handy, and will help us respond more rapidly, reach more at-risk communities, and reinforce the frontline services needed to help contain the outbreak and save lives,” Kwesiga said.
MSF Emergency Programme Manager Trish Newport warned that the outbreak remains a major concern because of the speed at which cases and deaths have emerged and the spread across several health zones and across borders.
She noted that many people in the affected parts of Ituri Province already face challenges accessing healthcare due to insecurity and limited services, making rapid intervention essential.
The donation forms part of Binance's wider activities across Africa, where the company has supported programmes in digital skills development, financial inclusion, education and community empowerment. The latest contribution extends that support to public health and humanitarian response efforts.
