President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has pledged Uganda’s technical and medical support to the Democratic Republic of Congo to tackle an ongoing Ebola outbreak.
President Museveni met Dr. Kamba Mulanda Samuel Roger, the DRC Minister of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare, at State House Entebbe on Wednesday evening. The minister delivered a special message regarding the public health situation from DRC President Félix Tshisekedi.
President Museveni offered clinical expertise, treatment capabilities, and operational backing to aid Congolese health authorities.
"I reaffirmed Uganda’s readiness to support our brothers and sisters in the DRC through treatment, technical expertise and close regional cooperation," President Museveni stated.
The President noted that Uganda contained its own recent outbreak through rapid case identification, rigorous contact tracing, and strict preventive controls.
To stop cross-border transmission, President Museveni recommended establishing specialized Ebola treatment centers inside eastern DRC. He noted that setting up facilities closer to vulnerable communities will ensure early medical intervention and prevent infected individuals from traveling long distances.
"Uganda contained its recent Ebola cases through early detection, treatment and strict public health measures," President Museveni added. "I also proposed establishing Ebola treatment centres inside eastern DRC to ensure early treatment closer to the affected communities and help contain the disease at its source."
The meeting reinforces cross-border health cooperation between the two East African nations as regional health agencies work to eliminate the viral threat.
