Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has welcomed Uganda’s unveiling of a memorial monument in honour of his late brother, Lieutenant Colonel Yonatan “Yoni” Netanyahu, at the Old Entebbe Airport terminal.
In a message released after the ceremony, Netanyahu described Yoni Netanyahu as a lasting symbol of courage, devotion and love for Israel, adding that his legacy continues to inspire Israeli forces and security agencies.
“Fifty years have passed, but his spirit continues to inspire in Israel and around the world,” Netanyahu said.
The tribute followed a ceremony presided over by the Chief of Defence Forces Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who presided over the unveiling of the monument at the historic site on August 1, 2026.
The CDF said the memorial honours both history and shared values between Uganda and Israel.
He said the monument stands for courage, duty and the protection of innocent lives. He added that it should guide future generations beyond the events of 1976.
He also noted that Uganda and Israel share long-standing ties built on respect and practical cooperation, and pledged deeper collaboration in security, innovation and development.
Barack Orland, who spoke for the Israeli delegation, thanked Gen Kainerugaba for supporting Israel and backing the decision to place the monument at Entebbe.
He said the memorial reflects a bond between the two countries and symbolises unity for future generations.
