Tooro’s new king, Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, has pledged to bring his people together and make the kingdom serve everyone, regardless of religion or background.
In his coronation address at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal on September 29, 2026, the king said he would draw on the skills of Tooro’s people to help the kingdom move forward.
“I will bring together our people, especially those who have knowledge and skills in different fields, to brainstorm on how to take forward Tooro with God on our side,” he said.
He urged residents to work together and support the kingdom. “The kingdom of Tooro belongs to the people and must work for the people of Tooro,” he said. He also pledged to work with religious leaders, elders, clans and other kingdoms.
The king began his address by asking those present to stand in memory of his predecessor, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru IV. He offered condolences to Queen Mother Best Kemigisa and the people of Tooro.
Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I said the kingdom would help families keep children in school, support young people seeking further education and work to improve employment prospects for graduates. He also called for greater use of government programmes to raise household incomes and protect Tooro’s forests, wetlands and rivers.
He ended with an invitation: “Karuziika is open, come let us build Tooro.”
