The UPDF has defended the Commander of Field Artillery Division Maj Gen Daniel Kakono against claims that he helped allocate more than 2,400 acres of disputed land in Hoima District unlawfully. It says police requested his deployment to prevent violence.
The family of the late Tito Byangire has reportedly petitioned President Yoweri Museveni over the land at Kapaapi in Kigorobya County. According to a Weekend Vision report cited by the army, the family accused Kakono of engineering the land’s unlawful allocation.
UPDF spokesperson Col Chris Magezi rejected the accusation in a statement issued today. He said the dispute also involves more than 1,000 bibanja holder households affected by projects in the Albertine region.
Magezi alleged that hundreds of occupants were evicted in early 2023. He said homes were burnt, animals were killed or stolen, and residents reported rape and assault. He alleged that some security personnel took part. The UPDF said the incidents were under investigation.
According to Magezi, then lands state minister Sam Mayanja ordered the evicted occupants resettled in October 2025. Hoima police later sought military support through the district security committee, and the UPDF cleared Kakono to deploy troops.
Magezi said the soldiers would remain to prevent violence while the dispute continues. The UPDF did not say when they would leave or how the competing claims to the land would be resolved.
