President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni hosted 33 Spanish student volunteers at State House Entebbe on Thursday to commend their development work in Gomba District.
The delegation completed a multi-week outreach program focused on building school infrastructure, expanding clean water access, and aiding vulnerable families.
During the meeting, President Museveni explained Uganda’s ongoing transition toward a modern commercial economy.
“The Government is working around the clock to transform Uganda from a pre-capitalist society to a money economy where people produce not only for the stomach but also for sale so that they earn money,” President Museveni said. “As more people join the money economy, the country’s tax base will also increase.”
He cited Gomba District as an example of rising commercial agriculture resulting from wealth creation initiatives.
Addressing questions regarding national stability amid regional instability, President Museveni credited Uganda's political philosophy.
“We prioritise the politics of interest over the politics of identity,” President Museveni stated. “Patriotism means loving Uganda because you need it for your own prosperity. Pan-Africanism means loving Africa because our internal market alone is not enough for our development.”
He emphasized that non-sectarian principles guide the national security forces.
“When we recruit into the army or the police, we do not ask about anybody’s tribe,” President Museveni added. “What matters is whether you are a good soldier. Unity of Uganda and unity of Africa are our guiding principles.”
The President also offered personal guidance to the visiting youth.
“As young people, avoid alcoholism, avoid womanising, get a family, be disciplined, and if you believe in God, it is an added advantage,” he advised.
Kelim Foundation Director Dr. Harris Kirumira Kalule, who co-managed the local initiative, thanked State House for supporting the volunteers during their stay.
Volunteer representative Lady Carmen Sillero expressed appreciation to the Ugandan government for providing logistics and security during the mission. She noted that official support ensured the successful execution of their community projects across Gomba District.
