The Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) has unveiled plans to construct a 400kV transmission line from Karuma to Tororo aimed at strengthening the country’s power grid.
The project will stretch approximately 346 kilometers from the Karuma Hydropower Plant to the proposed 400/200kV Uganda–Kenya border substation.
It will run through 15 districts, 85 sub-counties, and 640 villages, directly affecting 8,751 project-affected households. The districts include Kiryandongo, Oyam, Kole, Lira, Dokolo, Kalaki, Soroti, Ngora, Kumi, Bukedea, Butebo, Budaka, Mbale, Manafwa, and Tororo.
According to UETCL, the project corridor will span 60 meters in width, ensuring sufficient space for high-voltage power transmission. Kalpataru Power Transmission Limited has been contracted to implement the works.
The company emphasized that the Karuma–Tororo line will play a pivotal role in providing reliable transmission infrastructure to meet Uganda’s rising energy needs. Officials said the project will also improve electricity exports to the regional market while stimulating investment and industrial growth.
“This project is not only about strengthening the national grid, but also about empowering communities through access to reliable power, which in turn supports social and economic transformation,” UETCL said in a statement.
Once completed, the line is expected to enhance the evacuation of power from Karuma Hydropower Plant, reduce energy losses, and expand electricity access to more households and businesses.
