The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has praised Ghana for its critical role in developing Uganda’s military leadership, describing the relationship between the two countries as historic and transformative.

Speaking at the Defence Intelligence and Security Headquarters in Mbuya, Maj Gen Don William Nabaasa, who represented the Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, commended Ghana’s military for training and supporting UPDF officers over the years.

“UPDF and the Ghanaian Forces share a strong history that we cannot take for granted. You have supported us in several areas, including career development and operations,” said Maj Gen Nabaasa.

He noted that several senior UPDF commanders, including Gen David Muhoozi, Lt Gen James Mugira, and Maj Gen George Igumba, are graduates of Ghana’s military education programmes.

Nabaasa also recalled Uganda’s peacekeeping mission in Liberia, where Ghana’s forces played a key supportive role. “When UPDF was deployed to Liberia in unfamiliar territory, we felt at home due to your hospitality,” he said.

Maj Gen Richard Otto, Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security, assured the Ghanaian delegation that Uganda remains peaceful and stable. “Uganda is safe and peaceful. We have a wealth of tourist attractions, and you are free to explore and enjoy the beauty of our country,” he told the visitors.

The Ghanaian delegation of 37 students from the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College was led by Air Commodore Thomas Niifio Okai. He expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality and insightful engagement, which he said would enrich the officers’ professional growth.

The visit was attended by senior UPDF officers including Brig Gen Godwin Karugaba, Brig Gen James Kinalwa, Brig Gen Abdul Rugumayo, Brig Gen Robert Mugabe, Brig Gen Justus Rukundo, Col Chris Magezi, and Col Paddy Ankunda.
