President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has condemned sectarianism, warning that any leader or individual promoting divisions should be arrested. He made the remarks while addressing the media in the Kigezi sub-region during an assessment of the Parish Development Model (PDM).
The President emphasized that Uganda’s progress depends on unity and economic cooperation. He shared a personal experience from his school days, explaining how a Muganda businessman who bought cattle from his family contributed to his education.
“Politics is about helping people, not sectarianism. What matters is the market for each other’s businesses, not tribes,” Museveni stated. He noted that no single tribe in Uganda makes up 20% of the population, making national unity essential for development.
Museveni also announced plans to increase PDM funding from UGX 100 million to UGX 200 million if the current allocation is effectively utilized. He explained that the initial funds were primarily meant for coffee plantations but could also support other ventures such as pig farming and poultry.
“The government will assess how well the UGX 100 million is used before increasing the funding,” he said.
The President clarified that PDM funds are not limited to landowners. He cited examples of beneficiaries who have used the money to lease land and successfully engage in agriculture.
The Parish Development Model aims to improve livelihoods by supporting income-generating activities across Uganda.
