President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has pledged government support for families affected by recent landslides in Bulambuli District, promising two acres of land per household and funds for constructing better homes.
During an unplanned visit to Bunambutye Resettlement Village, Museveni addressed survivors of last month’s landslides in Kimono Village, Buluganya Sub-County, where over 30 lives were lost, and 20 homes destroyed.
“I’m sorry to hear what happened to you,” Museveni said. “The government will buy each family two acres of land and provide capital to start with. The UGX 10 million you’re receiving now is a partial payment to help you build small houses.”
He urged the survivors to convince their relatives still residing in the disaster-prone mountainous areas to relocate, emphasizing the government’s commitment to finding safe alternatives. “The mountain is not for settlement; it’s meant for forests. People should move to safer areas. We will relocate everyone,” Museveni stated.
The President also offered 20 cows to the survivors for the festive season and reiterated the need to prioritize safety in disaster-prone regions.
Bulambuli and other parts of the Bugisu subregion frequently experience landslides during heavy rains, posing persistent threats to residents. Museveni’s visit is part of his ongoing assessment tour of the Parish Development Model (PDM) program in the region.
