President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has applauded the Mehta Group for their role in establishing Uganda’s sugar industry and their commitment to the country’s development. Speaking at the centenary celebration of the Sugar Corporation of Uganda Limited (SCOUL) in Lugazi on October 12, 2024, the President hailed the group's contributions to Uganda’s industrial growth.

“I thank the Mehta family, particularly Mahendra Mehta and his wife, for their resilience and loyalty to Uganda,” said President Museveni, referencing their return to the country after the economic disruption caused by Idi Amin’s regime. “When we called them back, they came immediately,” he added.

SCOUL, the first sugar factory in Uganda, was founded in 1924 by the late Nanji Kalidas Mehta, establishing a century-long legacy that has greatly impacted Uganda’s economy. The President recognized both the elder Mehta and his successor, Mahendra Mehta, for their contributions. "Mahendra Mehta has now been engaged in managing the group for 72 years, which is a remarkable contribution," he said.

President Museveni also emphasized the strategic importance of Uganda’s decision to return properties to Asians expelled during Idi Amin's regime, a policy that helped attract further investments from companies like Mehta Group. “The Mehtas are now producing not only sugar but also biofuel, ethanol, electricity, and they’ve ventured into floriculture,” he noted.

Furthermore, the President directed petroleum companies to start blending imported fuel with locally produced biofuel, a move aimed at boosting Uganda’s renewable energy production.

First Lady Janet Museveni, who accompanied the President, lauded the Mehta family for their business ethics and community contributions, particularly in health and education. “The Mehta Group’s involvement in community development through hospitals, schools, and other ventures is truly commendable,” she said.
