The parliamentary committee on Appointments on Monday successfully vetted Financial Intelligence Authority (FIA) Executive Director Sydney Asubo following his renewal of term of office.

Asubo this morning appeared before the committee that was chaired by Speaker Rebecca Kadaga. This is the second time Asubo is appearing before the parliamentary committee in space of one month, having been kicked out of the same committee on 6th June for lack of copies of his academic documents and Curriculum Vitae (CV). It is reported that Asubo did not even have a single accountability report for the 4years he has served at the FIA.

On 21st May, 2019, Finance Minister Matia Kasaija wrote to the Speaker of Parliament informing her of the reappointment of Asubo as FIA boss whose term is expiring on 31st August 2019. The contract of Asubo and his deputy Michael Olupot Tukei were renewed to allow them serve for their second and last 4 year term in accordance with Section 28 and 31 of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2013.

Speaking to this reporter after the vetting session, Asubo without preempting the outcomes of the vetting, said that the vetting was successfully and that he awaits the results. He also confirmed that indeed he was ‘kicked out’ of the first session because he had not come with his academic documents.

“I had not simply come with my academic documents. So this time I came with them. And yes, the meeting went on well,” Asubo said. FIA is government agency established by Parliament to monitor, investigate, and prevent money laundering in the country.
