President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has issued a message of condolence to the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Her Excellency Samia Suluhu Hassan, following the death of her husband, Mr. Hafidh Ameir Hassan.
Mr. Hafidh Ameir Hassan passed away on Monday, September 7, 2026, at the Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar while undergoing medical treatment. He served as Tanzania's first First Gentleman following President Samia's assumption of office in March 2021.
In a public message delivered on Tuesday, President Museveni expressed solidarity on behalf of the Ugandan people, his family, and himself.
"It was with a lot of sadness, that I received the bad news of the death of your dear husband, Mr. Hafidh Hassan," President Museveni stated. "I extend the most heart-felt condolences from the brother People of Uganda and from my family and myself, to your Excellency, your family and the People of Tanzania."
President Museveni praised President Samia's dedicated leadership and highlighted key joint strategic projects executed between Uganda and Tanzania during her tenure as Vice President and President, including:
- East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP): The 1,443 km export pipeline project connecting Uganda's oilfields in the Albertine Graben to the Port of Tanga in Tanzania.
- Cross-Border Energy Infrastructure: Joint power and energy projects, including the Murongo-Kikagate mini-hydro power station and the Masaka–Bukoba high-voltage transmission line.
- Standard Gauge Railway (SGR): Regional rail connections linking Isaka to Uganda to facilitate intra-EAC trade.
- Road Transportation Networks: Upgrading cross-border tarmac road networks linking northern Tanzania and southern Uganda.
President Museveni noted that President Samia's public service and leadership had been sustained by the strong support of her husband and family.
"The dedication you show must have been supported by your dear husband and family... It must, therefore, be a great loss to you. I pray that the Almighty God sees you through these dark days," President Museveni added.
