Parliament is sitting this Thursday morning to consider motions for the approval of the new Vice President and Prime Minister.

President Yoweri Museveni on Tuesday shuffled the cabinet where he appointed Katakwi Woman MP Jessica Alupo as Vice President and former Minister of State for Health (General Duties) Robinah Nabbanja as Prime Minister.

Nabbanja and Alupo are set to be ‘vetted’ by the whole House before the parliamentary appointments committee proceeds to vet the ministerial appointees next week.

Article 108(1) and 108A(1) of the Constitution requires that the House approves the person nominated to be Vice President and Prime Minister respectively by simple majority vote.

During this plenary sitting, a motion for approval of Vice President will be moved by a Member representing government. The motion which shall be seconded, will then be debated by the whole House before the Speaker puts a question for approval. The same will be done for the position of Prime Minister. When all is done, the newly approved Vice President and Prime Minister (if present) will be required, if they so wish, to make a statement to the House.

Later in the afternoon, Parliament will again convene at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds for the presentation of the National Budget speech by President Yoweri Museveni, who is by law, the Minister of Finance.
