Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga has summoned two ministers to answer to allegations of flouting COVID-19 guidelines.

Health minister Jane Aceng and State Minister for Kampala, Benny Namugwanya were recently filmed appearing to be addressing huge crowds of people in total disregard of major Standard Operating Procedures such as wearing of face masks and social distancing.

This matter was raised on the floor of Parliament by Kalungu West MP Joseph Ssewungu who asked Parliament to summon the two ministers to explain why they flouted the presidential directives on COVID-19.

Similarly, Bukonjo West MP Godfrey Katusabe demanded the Health Minister Aceng resigns for allegedly convening a mass gathering contrary to the Ministry of Health guidelines, while Kira Municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju asked Uganda Police to apply the law fairly saying that Aceng was not reprimanded for her actions.

Problems started for Minister Aceng when she last week declared that she will be contesting for Lira Woman MP Seat that is currently represented by UPC’s Joy Atim Ongom. In her response on social media, Aceng denied holding a mass rally, but rather argued that she was teaching locals how to wear a mask.
