The Electoral Commission has for the second time extended the period for updating of the National Voters Register.

The Commission last week extended the exercise for five days, which run out today, Monday. However, in a brief statement, the Electoral Commission said it was extending the exercise for another seven days up to 23rd December 2019.

“EC has further extended the period for the update of the National Voters Register from today 16th up to the 23rd Dec. 2019,” said EC Spokesperson Jotham Taremwa in a statement posted on the electoral body’s official social media account on Monday.

Announcing the first extension last week, Electoral Commission Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi said it was due to the overwhelming turn up of voters at the several updating centres. Meanwhile Taremwa says a number of factors including the heavy rains being experienced in many places across the country, necessitated another extension.

He argues that rains could have prevented many people from turning up for the update exercise.

The general voter register update exercise started on November 21, 2019 and was at first scheduled to end on December 11, prior to last week’s extension.
