Unpaid tuition pushed Edgar from pharmacy towards interior design

Days before his final pharmacy examinations, Edgar Mungufeni faced a setback that changed his career path. He could not clear his tuition balance and missed the exams.

The financial hurdle forced him to reconsider his ambitions. He returned to the creativity he had nurtured since childhood and later established Aurren Design, an interior design business in Uganda.

Growing up, Mungufeni found it easier to express himself through drawing and painting. His school artwork attracted attention from teachers and classmates. Some teachers kept his pieces in their personal collections.

Yet when he chose a career, he opted for pharmacy, drawn by the prospect of stable employment.

During his studies, he realised his interests lay elsewhere. Missing his examinations brought that question into focus.

Mungufeni enrolled for a Diploma in Interior Architecture and financed his studies himself. To raise money, he teamed up with his friend Pius to paint houses under the name Interior Flippers.

The jobs were small and earnings modest. But they gave him practical experience in working with clients and turning ideas into finished spaces.

The venture later became Interior Creations. As his ambitions grew, Mungufeni set out to establish a luxury interior design brand built around quality, lasting appeal and attention to detail.

That vision became Aurren Design.

The company now works on residential and commercial interiors, collaborating with contractors and other industry partners to create spaces tailored to clients’ needs.

For Mungufeni, the next goal reaches beyond individual commissions. He wants Aurren Design to contribute to the development of African design.

His journey began with drawings that caught his teachers’ attention. Today, that same interest shapes the spaces in which people live and work.
