Staff at Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) will no longer be a burden to their relatives when they die after the Authority decided to hire a professional funeral service provider for them.
On 1st July, 2019, KCCA announced that the Authority has allocated funds to be used for the Procurement of Framework Contract for Funeral Management Services for KCCA Staff for a period of 18 months.
As a result, KCCA has started receiving bids which must be accompanied by a bid security of Shs2m up to a deadline of July 26, 2019. The Authority expects to find a contractor by end of September this year.
However, it remains unclear how much KCCA will spend on each deceased staff. Both KCCA spokesperson Peter Kaujju and his deputy Robert Kalumba could not pick our reporter’s repeated phone calls.
KCCA will not be the first government agency to cover funeral expenses for its deceased staff. Ugandan parliament spends Shs68m for each MP who dies and this includes buying American Casket at Shs6m, Shs5.5m for the grave, Shs4.5m for Order of Service books, Shs15m on feeding mourners and Shs17.5m on allowances for police.
