Ministry of Health has directed the National Drug Authority (NDA) to monitor and inspect hands sanitizers on the market as government remains vigilant to mitigate the spread of coronavirus.
While appearing before the Public Accounts Committee to respond to queries raised in the Auditor General’s report on Wednesday, Dr. Diana Atwine, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health expressed fears that a number of fake manufacturers might use this time when the sanitizers are on high demand to produce and supply fake disinfectants.
She therefore, called on NDA that is mandated to regulate drugs in the country, including their manufacture, importation, distribution, and licensing, to ensure that those on market meet the qualified standards.
She advised that "genuine sanitizers should have 60% alcohol."
The good news however, remains that Uganda has not yet registered any COVID-19 case as other East African countries continue to register cases. Government continues to rally the general public to remain hygienic by avoiding hugs and handshakes and regularly wash hands with soap.
On Tuesday, Speaker Rebecca Kadaga announced a travel ban to all MPs within and outside East Africa. As such, Government is also planning to ban flights from high risk countries. According to Kadaga, there is also a ray of hope as local scientists in partnership with a US scientist are in the process of manufacturing a sanitizer that will “instantly kill the virus.” Museveni is this afternoon scheduled to address the nation over coronavirus.
