The Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development is collaborating with tech giant Huawei Technologies to lower the cost of digital services and boost internet access across Uganda.
Finance Minister Hon. Henry Musasizi met with the Huawei Technologies (Uganda) leadership team at the ministry headquarters in Kampala to review policy strategies for the sector.
Managing Director Zhang Hao (Edward) led the visiting Huawei delegation alongside Director Economic Affairs Moses Kaggwa.
During the meeting, Finance Minister Hon. Henry Musasizi commended Huawei for aligning its technology footprint with Uganda’s Tenfold Growth Strategy over its 25 years of local operations.
He challenged the tech company to advance youth ICT skills training into local hardware manufacturing.
The minister emphasized that domestic assembly of computers, smartphones, and communications hardware remains a priority goal for the Science, Technology, and Innovation sector.
He also praised Huawei for its corporate social responsibility initiatives that continue to empower ordinary citizens through digital tools.
In response, Managing Director Zhang Hao (Edward) outlined policy proposals aimed at expanding nationwide digital connectivity.
The proposals include targeted tax incentives and the introduction of low-cost smartphones to increase countrywide smartphone ownership from the current 46 percent.
Both parties agreed to deepen cooperation to accelerate digital inclusion and support Uganda's long-term economic transformation agenda.
