The July 2026 rankings place Makerere 776th globally, up from 925th in the January 2026 edition.

The university also rose from 13th to 11th in Africa. It retained its position as the highest-ranked university in Uganda and East Africa.

Makerere attributed the improvement to stronger performance in research and online academic visibility.

Its Impact Rank improved from 1,593 to 1,185. The indicator assesses the number of external domains that link to the university’s online content.

Makerere also registered a major gain in the Excellence Rank, moving from 1,095 to 715.

Webometrics assesses universities based on how well their academic, research and societal contributions are reflected online. The ranking seeks to encourage higher education institutions to strengthen their digital presence and make research more accessible.

Makerere said it will continue expanding the online visibility of its teaching, research, knowledge transfer and partnerships through academic journals and other platforms.
