Makerere University has launched a public knowledge-sharing platform aimed at linking research, teaching and community outreach to speed up innovation and economic growth.
The platform stems from a project led by Edward Bbaale. The study examined how universities can turn research and innovation into practical benefits for communities, businesses and the wider economy. The work aligns with the government’s tenfold growth agenda and received funding from the Makerere University Research and Innovations Fund.
The research also assessed how university work can better support national priorities in agriculture, tourism, mineral-based industrialisation, and science and technology under the Fourth National Development Plan.
Speaking at the launch, First Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs Sarah Ssali said the platform will strengthen the link between research and social change. She urged scholars to engage in public policy debates, noting that how knowledge is used often carries political weight.
Dr Stephen Wandera, representing the Mak-RIF Grants Management Committee, said the platform comes at a critical time as Makerere positions itself as a research-led university with measurable impact.
He said the platform will help researchers reach relevant audiences. He encouraged the team to use policy briefs, journals and online forums alongside workshops.
Director of Research, Innovation and Partnerships Robert Wamala said the initiative reflects Makerere’s commitment to research that responds to national needs and delivers real outcomes.
Project co-lead Dr Peter Babyenda said the work blends research, outreach and capacity building, drawing from global models where universities directly support agriculture, industry and the growth of SMEs.
Dean of the School of Economics Ibrahim Michael Okumu warned that while universities produce strong research, impact has been slow. He said relevance will be judged by contribution to national development.
The platform is open to the public at dissemination.ug. The launch took place at Sheraton Hotel Kampala and drew participants from Kyambogo University, Gulu University, Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Busitema University and Soroti University.
