Pupils and staff at Chichwamba Church of Uganda Primary School in Lyantonde District are celebrating the school’s first permanent classroom block, built by Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) engineers.
The two-classroom structure was constructed as part of the activities to mark the 44th Tarehe Sita anniversary. The structure is the school’s first permanent building since its founding in 2017.
Head teacher Ekyarikunda Phiona expressed gratitude to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the UPDF for the new facility.
Capt. Rebecca Twinomujuni, the project engineer, said the construction took just one and a half months, with most materials sourced locally. She also commended the community for supporting the project and taking ownership of the school’s development.
Ssempijja Emmanuel, a pupil, said he was surprised by the UPDF’s engineering capabilities. “I thought the UPDF’s role was only to defend the country, but I didn’t know they could also build such structures,” he said.
The new classroom block was officially handed over to the school on February 5, 2025.
