The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has sent a team to compete in the 18th Inter-Forces Games, which bring together security agencies to promote teamwork and cooperation.
The games will take place in Gulu and will feature teams from the Uganda Police Force, Uganda Prisons Service and Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).
The competition will include handball, football, netball, volleyball, kickboxing, taekwondo, athletics, darts and shooting.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony at the Land Force Headquarters in Bombo on August 21, 2026, Major General Richard Karemire, the Joint Staff for Formal Education, Sports and Culture, said the games strengthen relations among security institutions.
“We shall be competing in different disciplines. This is the spirit. That is why we are getting together through sports, to enhance friendship and harmony,” Maj Gen Karemire said.
He urged the UPDF team to compete with discipline and respect other participants, saying the institutions share a common duty despite having different roles.
“Don’t look at Prisons, Police and UWA as your enemies. These are brothers, but sports is competition,” he said.
Maj Gen Karemire challenged the athletes to maintain the UPDF’s reputation for excellence and show the same commitment they demonstrate while serving in their professional roles.
“As UPDF, we are known for never losing battles. We never lose battles. So, if we don’t lose on the battlefront, how can we lose on the playground?” he asked.
He also reminded the team to uphold discipline throughout their stay in Gulu, saying the force’s values should guide their conduct both on and off the field.
“We are a disciplined force, and that is why we have continued to excel. So, we expect nothing else but discipline while you are there in Gulu,” he said.
Acting Director Defence Public Information Col Chris Magezi said the games provide an opportunity for security agencies to interact and build stronger working relationships.
He said the UPDF team will represent the force while promoting unity among the participating institutions.
The Inter-Forces Games are held to encourage cooperation, friendship and teamwork among Uganda’s security agencies through sports.
